Academic Writing for Secondary Students
This course guides students through successfully brainstorming and writing texts aligned to the three most assigned genres of academic writing: research, argument/opinion and informational writing. Learners engage real world artifacts as model texts.
This course is appropriate for all level of writers.
June 1-5, 2026
Meets 2 hours daily for one week and includes a 1-1, 60-minute feedback session. All sessions are via Zoom.
Limited to 12 learners
To ensure Learners can continue to utilize their learning, we encourage learners to have access to Google Drive as a storage space for writing models.
Strong writers are developed from studying the craft of writing. Learners should be prepared to engage texts from their favorite hobbies whether that be video gaming, anime, fashion, or sports.
This course is offered at two levels:
Incoming Freshmen and rising Sophomore (9:30-11:30 a.m.)
Rising Junior and Seniors (1-3 p.m.)
About the instructor:
Dr. Lanette Jimerson is a writer, scholar and educator with 20+ years of experience teaching writing. She has taught secondary English as well as entry level college reading and composition. To ensure that learners are engaged Dr. Jimerson leverages individual’s interests to develop college level writing proficiency.
Dr. Jimerson earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley
