Personal Narrative

Course Description

This course provides students the opportunity to explore the special moments in their life through creative non-fiction. Students will write various personal narratives to reflect upon and imagine a life of connection.

The culminating activity is an author’s chair where participants will share their writing.

Course Dates:

Session: July 27-31, 2026

Time: 9:30 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. PDT

Location: Meets in Downtown Oakland (address provided once registered). Within walking distance of the BART Station.

Supplies Needed

Learners will be engaging personal narrative thus pictures/items/memorabilia from key moments would be useful.

What Age Group?

This course is best for ages 14-16 years old.

About the instructor:

Dr. Lanette Jimerson is a writer, scholar and educator with 20+ years teaching writing. She has taught writing at the secondary and college level, including several teen courses for the Bay Area Writing Project.

Lanette earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.
